Spiritual Direction

“Spiritual direction is, in reality, nothing more than a way of leading us to see and obey the real Director — the Holy Spirit hidden in the depths of our soul.” (Thomas Merton, Trappist monk)

Spiritual direction, or spiritual companioning, is an ancient practice in which a person seeks to realize the role and movement of the Holy in his or her life, through conversation and shared time with a companion trained in spiritual direction.  Spiritual directors are confidential, attentive and supportive listeners who help create an atmosphere of prayerful contemplation with the goal of companioning the directee as he or she reflects on and grows in his or her relationship with the Holy.

Spiritual direction is the practice of companioning someone on his or her spiritual journey; it is not therapy nor counseling.  The director listens to the directee’s life stories, asks questions, reflects on responses and helps the directee clarify what it is that he or she is seeking and experiencing.

How often one meets with a spiritual director is different for each individual and may depend on what events are happening in his or her life at a given time.  Some people engage in spiritual direction to complement a private retreat; others prefer to meet with their spiritual director on a regular basis, usually once every four to six weeks for an hour.

As trained professionals, it is customary for spiritual directors to request a fee or a free-will offering for the sessions with their directees.

The spiritual directors at the Loretto Spirituality Center serve anyone seeking to deepen his or her relationship with the Holy and work with people from all faith backgrounds.  If you would like more information about spiritual direction, or to request a spiritual director, please contact Kim Williams at  or Mary Ellen McElroy at, or  call the Spirituality Center at 303.986.1541.
